John William Stewart, Jr.

John William Stewart, Jr., 77, of Port Lavaca, Texas peacefully went to be with his Lord at his home on January 31, 2025 after a hard-fought battle with cancer. 

The oldest of five children, John was born in Austin, Texas on October 10, 1947 to John William Stewart, Sr. and Evelyn Browning Stewart. Upon graduating from Rockdale (Texas) High School in 1966, he enlisted in the Army and served as a military policeman in Korea attaining the rank of sergeant, being honorably discharged in 1969.  John moved to Austin, Texas, married, and served in the Austin Police Department in multiple divisions attaining the rank of lieutenant, retiring in 1995.

After a brief retirement, John moved to Brady, Texas in 1997 to serve as Chief of Police until 2003 when he relocated to Port Lavaca, Texas to serve as Chief of Police until he ultimately retired in 2012. 

John was an active member of Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church, a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 4403, and two-time commander of American Legion Post 0167, all in Port Lavaca.

When not serving others, John was an avid fisherman and hunter who enjoyed the great outdoors.

John leaves behind the love of his life and wife of 43 years, Carol Anne Poston Stewart.

John was welcomed into Heaven by his father John William Stewart, Sr., his mother Evelyn Browning Stewart, and his sisters Margaret Stewart Farr and Elaine Stewart Rose.

John is survived by his sister Eileen Stewart of Troy, North Carolina; brother Gary Stewart and wife Sarah of Lake Jackson, Texas; daughter Sandra Jean Williams and husband Ben of Bastrop, Texas; daughter Dianne Rene Duke and husband James of Colleyville, Texas; and son Lee Thomas Stewart and wife Christine of Elgin, Texas, 11 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and numerous extended family members including his “adopted” third daughter Trina Bradley and husband Brent of Sulfur, Louisiana. 

Visitation will be Friday, February 7, 2025 at Richardson-Colonial Funeral Home, 123 Newlin Street, Port Lavaca, Texas from 5 to 8 pm with Rosary at 7pm. 

Funeral Mass will be February 8, 2025 at 11 am Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church, 415 West Austin Street, Port Lavaca, Texas with the interment to follow at Port Lavaca Cemetery, 500 Martin Luther King Drive in Port Lavaca. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic School, 301 South San Antonio Street, Port Lavaca, Texas 77979.
