Calhoun County businesses and government offices close due to winter weather
Faced with freezing temperatures and potentially hazardous road conditions, starting this evening, Monday, Jan. 20, local businesses and government agencies are preparing, with many adjusting their hours.
According to the Texas Department of Transportation, State Hwy 35 causeway will be pretreated and open. TxDOT personnel will be on standby for winter weather events. Bridges across Calhoun County have been sanded by county personnel.
The following is a list of current closures, which will be updated as additional information is received.
Tuesday, Jan. 21 closures:
- City of Port Lavaca (open 10 a.m. Wednesday.)
- Monterrey Café (open 10 .m. Wednesday.)
- City of Seadrift
- The Port Lavaca Wave
- County Courthouse and offices (open 10 a.m. Wednesday.)
- All Calhoun County ISD offices and schools (school start delayed by two hours Wednesday.)
- City of Point Comfort (open 10 a.m. Wednesday.)
- Calhoun County YMCA (24 hour access will still be available, opens 10 a.m. Wednesday.)
- Sharkies Bar & Grill
- Bubba’s Seafood
- Port Lavaca Clinic
- Memorial Medical Clinic locations (delayed openings 12 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday)
- The Harbor Children’s Alliance and Victim Center (open 8 a.m. Thursday)
- Coastal Barber Shop (open 10 a.m. Wednesday)
- Port Lavaca Chamber of Commerce
- Bayside Seafood
- Calhoun County Senior Citizens and the Outpost
- Scully's Sports Bar & Grill (open 10 a.m. Wednesday.)
Waste & Recycling Services:
Republic Services will have a late start on Tuesday for all residential and commercial waste/recycle services due to potential road conditions from freezing precipitation.

Tuesday Service Residents: Please have your carts out by 10 a.m. Tuesday and leave them out until serviced (Tuesday and/or Wednesday, if necessary).

Wednesday Service Residents: Republic will run as usual after completing Tuesday routes.
Warming Centers:
The following warming stations will be available to the public:

Bayside Community Church, 25080 State Hwy 172, Olivia, TX, (Open until 7 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22; pets in crates are allowed, contact Pastor Ruben at 361-781-4179.)

Rick Brush Community Center, 108 Jones St, Point Comfort, TX, (Open through freezing weather, dogs only accepted if they are registered through the city of Point Comfort and crated, contact Brandon Mason at 361-746-8139 or Don Doering at 361-532-9061.)
The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office also reminds the public to refrain from travelling, as well as to drive slowly and be cautious of hazards such as ice on bridges and overpasses. Sheriff Bobbie Vickery also stated that the public should be cautious of portable space heaters and reminded residents to drip faucets and bring outdoor pets inside.
