One man is dead following a vehicle incident Sunday.

Port Lavaca Police Department responded to a call regarding an unresponsive man near the 300 block of N. Commerce St. at approximately 1 a.m. on Sunday morning. Upon arrival, Port Lavaca Police Chief Colin Rangnow stated that officers found 54-year-old Port Lavaca resident Alva “Butch” Stringham laying on the ground and injured.

“Calhoun County EMS responded to the scene and Stringham was transported to Detar Medical Center in Victoria for further observation. He was responsive, but later passed away at Detar,” Rangnow said.

According to Rangnow, first responders located a white Ford truck in a grassy area near the water. Police believe that Stringham was struck by his own vehicle after it was left in gear, Rangnow said.

“Somehow, the vehicle was left in gear and he was struck by the vehicle,” Rangnow said. “At this time, it doesn’t look like foul play was involved.”

The incident is currently under investigation by the Port Lavaca Police Department. There are no other details available at this time.
