National Night Out and Community Expo set for Oct. 1

by Staff Report

Port Lavaca will host its annual National Night Out and Community Expo on Tuesday, Oct. 1, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Bauer Community Center. This free event promises an exciting evening filled with activities for all ages, including tours of first responder vehicles, interactive games, a dunk tank, and raffle prizes.
More than 40 local non-profits and community groups will be present with booths, offering a chance for residents to learn more about resources available in Calhoun County.
“We have an active group of non-profit agencies that meet quarterly, and last year, we held our first Non-Profit Expo,” said Tania French, Port Lavaca Events Coordinator. “It was a great success. This year, we are partnering with area first responders, local agencies, and community partners to bring even greater awareness to resources within Calhoun County.”
The event is part of National Night Out, a campaign that began in 1984 to promote police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie, making neighborhoods safer.
Over the years, it has grown into a national initiative observed by millions of Americans, providing a unique opportunity for law enforcement to engage with the community.
Karen Neal, Port Lavaca Police Department Office Manager, highlighted the significance of the collaboration. “National Night Out is a perfect time for our first responders to connect with residents in a positive, relaxed setting. It’s not just about safety; it’s about building relationships with the people we serve.”
Transportation will be available for those in need, with buses running from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., providing pick-up and drop-off services at Bethel Assembly of God, George Adams Park, and City Park.
