Barbara Jean Williams, a loving mother, dedicated nurse, and cherished community member, passed away on September 4, 2024. Born on December 29, 1941, to Alonzo Thomas (Shorty) Barefield, Sr. and Ida Mae Barnes, Barbara spent her formative years in Long Mott, Texas, where she began her lifelong commitment to caring for others.
Barbara’s nursing career was distinguished by her work in the maternity department, where she played a crucial role in delivering countless babies to the Port Lavaca community. Her dedication extended further when she served as the director of nurses at a local nursing home, demonstrating her unwavering compassion and leadership.
An active member of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, Barbara found joy in cooking, playing pool, and creating a welcoming home for her children’s friends, whom she treated with the same love and care she had for her own family. Her home was a place of warmth and inclusivity, reflecting her generous spirit.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Alonzo Thomas (Sonny) Barefield, Jr., her husband Earl Frank Williams, Sr., her son James Lester Williams, and her daughter Billie Marie Franklin. She is survived by her three beloved children: Anthony Wayne Williams (Rhonda) of Austin, TX, Arnold Lee Williams of Miami, FL, and Cynthia Lynette Singleton (Ronald) of Hutto, TX and one stepson Earl Frank Williams, Jr. of Port Lavaca.
Her legacy continues through her six grandchildren: LaShawna and Derek (Alisha) of Seattle, WA; Paige Singleton of Austin, TX; Dr. Christen Dillard of Houston, TX; Anthony Marlon (Jeanelly) of Austin, TX and Royce Williams of Chesapeake, VA. Barbara was also a proud great-grandmother to Austin Groves and Bryce Williams of Seattle, WA.
Barbara will be remembered for her nurturing heart, her vibrant personality, and her deep love for her family and friends. Her presence will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Barbara’s memory will forever live on in the hearts of those she touched with her kindness and love. May she rest in peace, knowing she made a lasting difference in the lives of those she cherished.
A memorial service to honor Barbara's life will be held on Saturday, October 5th at 11:00 AM at New Beginnings Church, 301 Alcoa Drive, Port Lavaca, TX. 77979. We are planning a Celebration of Life to reflect the joy and warmth that she brought into the lives of others.
