Captain Mark Robert Szela

Mark Szela, age 64, of Port Lavaca passed away July 17, 2024. He was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts on October 11, 1959. He worked multiple jobs first as a Merchant Marine Captain because of his love of the sea then he went into the construction field.
He had various hobbies including reading, making wine, fishing, hunting, woodworking, & gardening. His love of fishing included making custom fishing rods & repairing fishing equipment. This led to him opening a business Back Bay Custom Rods. His final hobby was building military models.
He is survived by his mother Lucie Plant of Marion, Massachusetts and his loving wife Olga Amejorado Szela of Port Lavaca. They were happily married for 40 years. He had two sons Stuart Michael (Lacey) Szela & Kevin Marcus (Nicole) Szela. He had sister Deborah (Dominic) Picard of North Stonington, Connecticut. He had four loving grandkids Peter Joe Szela, Brayleighn Navy Szela, Haley Michelle Torres, & Kenna Marie Szela.
He is preceded in death by his father Peter Plant & his brother James Plants.
The family would like to thank Hospice of South Texas for their exceptional care of Mark. They would like to thank Davita Kidney Dialysis Center for their caring staff.
He will have a celebration of life at St. Ann Catholic Hall in Point Comfort, TX on July 26, 2024 from 6 to 8 pm. Burial will be at a later date.
