Billy Wayne Hopmann
Billy Wayne Hopmann, 80, of Waller County, passed away peacefully at home on July 2, 2024, due to heart and respiratory failure. He was born January 31, 1944, in the new Wehdem community (near Brenham), to the late Lonnie and Mildred Pieper Hopmann. He spent most of his childhood living in Point Comfort, where he developed a love for the Texas coast and fishing. He graduated from Calhoun High School in 1962 and continued to root for the Sandcrabs for the rest of his life. He attended Victoria College, U of H-Victoria, Bethany College, and U of H- Houston. He was drafted into the US Army in 1966 and served as a Payroll Distribution Specialist in the 8th Infantry Division,
stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War. While there, he visited several countries. He was honorably discharged in 1968. Bill eventually landed in Houston and spent most of his career as a Computer Programming Manager for St. Luke's Hospital. Bill and his wife Cyndy later retired in Cape Carancahua for several years before moving to the Katy area six years ago.
Bill was a man of immense humor, wisdom, and quick wit, all of which remained sharp throughout his life. He enjoyed keeping people on their toes in one way or another! In his free time, 'Hoppy' (as some of his buddies called him) enjoyed ice cold silver bullets while fishing in Lavaca Bay (in his younger years), playing
dominoes and video poker, visiting with family and friends, birdwatching, rooting for the Houston Astros and Texans, and being a Jeopardy champ (from his chair at home, of course). ot necessarily in that order. He also enjoyed listening to classical and jazz music. His four grandchildren and the recent arrival of his great- grandson lit up his world! Despite numerous ailments, against all odds, and surprisingly to him, he survived several years longer than he expected.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years Cyndy Russell Hopmann of Waller County; daughters Crispin Gale (Andrew) Ureste of Victoria and Lori (Jason) Rohr of Waller County; sister Virginia King of Victoria; brothers
Donald (Carolyn) Hopmann of Columbiana, AL and Ray (Mary Ann) Hopmann of Victoria, brother-in-law Willie Warzecha of Point Comfort, granddaughters Brittany Gale (Joshua Taylor) of Port O'Connor, Morgan Gale (Eric Duran) of Cuero, and Lauren Gale of Round Rock, grandson John Wayne Rohr of Waller County, and great- grandson August James Duran of Cuero, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Including his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters Betty Warzecha, Marilyn Kabela, and Barbara Hopmann, in-laws Frank and Jessie 'Lucy' Russell, and brothers-in-law Johnny Kabela, Wally King, Larry Russell, and orman Russell.
A brief celebration of life will be held at the VFW in Port Lavaca (16 Konrad Rd.) at 11 AM on July 20, 2024, with a private reception afterwards (at another location) for close family and friends. Please dress comfortably and wear Astros attire or any shade of blue (no Dallas Cowboys garb!) and come prepared to share your favorite stories about him.
In lieu of flowers, please take a friend or loved one out to lunch. He wouldn't want us to grieve over his death, he'd tell us life's too short, to live life to its fullest potential, and to do what makes us happy!
Billy will be dearly missed by all who knew him, but his legacy will live on through his family and friends who will keep his memory alive. Funeral arrangements were
