Contestants to compete in Nacho Average Salsa contest
The scent of fresh salsa, the sound of mariachi music, and the backdrop of the bayfront will set the stage as Port Lavaca launches its Cinco de Mayo celebration Saturday, May 2, at Bayfront Peninsula Park.
The free event runs from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. and invites residents and visitors alike to spend the day along the waterfront with live music, games, food and a bring-your-own-beverage format.
At the heart of the afternoon is the “Nacho Average Salsa Contest,” where home cooks will go head-to-head for bragging rights and the title of best salsa in town. Entries will be accepted from 4 to 5 p.m., with winners announced at 6 p.m. Categories include best mild, best hot, most creative, best fruit, overall best and best salsa name. Contest rules may be found at www.pltx.org/cincosalsa.
Earlier in the day, families can take part in Chalko de Mayo from 3 to 5 p.m., while Lotería runs from 4 to 6 p.m. The Chunk da Chancla Contest, at 3:30 p.m., adds a playful local twist, offering a nod to the community’s former Flip-Flop Fling.
Music builds throughout the evening, beginning with Mariachi Tapatio at 6:30 p.m., followed by Crossroadzz Crue at 7:30 p.m. The night will crescendo with a headline performance by Masizzo at 9:30 p.m.
Festivalgoers are also encouraged to bring kites and “fly your fiesta colors” across the bayfront throughout the day.
Tania French, Port Lavaca events coordinator, said the celebration reflects both culture and community spirit while introducing a new tradition for the city.
“We wanted to create something that feels lively, welcoming, and uniquely Port Lavaca,” French said. “You can come out, compete in the salsa contest, enjoy the music or just relax by the water with your family. It’s about bringing people together and celebrating our community.”
The event is sponsored by the City of Port Lavaca and will feature food vendors, games, and entertainment.
